What Happens with Old or Loose Dentures

What Happens with Old or Loose Dentures

As long-trusted tooth replacement options, dentures improve a person’s smile and overall look. Since they simulate the way teeth naturally function, dentures need to have an appropriate fit. As people get older, natural changes occur in the body, including the teeth and mouth. Gum ridges in mouths may shrink, causing dentures to become loose. Eventually, the ability to chew can be impeded, and overall discomfort may result.

When this happens, old dentures need replacing. Neglecting to do so can be problematic:

What Happens with Old or Loose Dentures
Pain in the mouth
Dentures that fit well on the gums are comfortable. When they are old or loose, however, they rub and cause swelling and pain. If a person continues to wear ill-fitting dentures, mouth pain will increase — as well as the chance of infection.

Stomach problems
When denture wearers cannot chew or eat properly, they may make poor food choices. These decisions can influence digestive problems.

Facial changes

As people age, gums and bone shrink slowly and the distance between the chin and nose shortens. Teeth also adjust to keep the face proportional. However, if a person wears dentures, they need to have them regularly adjusted to avoid changes to the face. When dentures are old and loose as gums and teeth become shorter, the wearer must awkwardly close his/her mouth so teeth can touch. This, too, changes facial expressions.

Jaw disorders
With old or loose dentures, the jaw works unnaturally hard to accommodate them. This may cause neck or jaw pain and lead to temporomandibular joint disorder (“TMJ”).

Mouth infections
Loose dentures rub on gums and cause pain. Constant rubbing may create a callus (called an epulis) on the gums, which requires oral surgery to remove.

Old dentures can become discoloured, a sign they may be contaminated. The older the dentures, the longer bacteria has an opportunity to grow on them — even with regular cleaning. If not replaced, aging dentures could lead to infection.

How to Fix Them

Any denture concern can be fixed by a denture expert; regular consultations will help a patient avoid wearing old or loose dentures. Any adjustments or replacements needed to maintain the fit of your dentures and protect your health can take place during an appointment. Dentures can be repaired with these methods:

  • Relining a liquid acrylic moulds the denture to the shape of your gums.
  • Recasting – dentures are remade for a better fit.
  • Mini-implants – inserted into the bone to better stabilize dentures.
