What Happens at a Recall Visit

New dentures can open up a whole world of possibilities and benefits for someone who’s experienced tooth loss. Some of these include a restored smile, improved bite and speech, better aligned facial structure, the opportunity to enjoy favourite foods, and increased self esteem.

Since it takes time to get used to new dentures, your denturist may schedule a follow up, recall visit after a few months. This visit is important because it provides your oral health care provider the opportunity to make sure that dentures are fitted correctly while also providing a chance to voice any concerns. If your denturist spots problems, s/he will make necessary adjustments or provide options to prevent further complications.

After setting the appointment, you can expect the following during your denture recall visit:

What Happens at a Recall Visit
1. An update of dental and medical history. Your denturist may ask questions about how you’ve adjusted to the new dentures so far and may note any noticeable changes for future care.

2. Integrity check for your dentures. Your denturist will check the dentures aren’t damaged, won’t slip easily, and if there are any structural problems.

3. Cleaning and polishing of your dentures, if required. Dentures should look as natural as possible. Your denturist may clean and polish the appliances in order to match them with the colour of remaining teeth.

4. Oral examination. This is to make sure dentures fit properly and if any noticeable changes are occurring with your bite, facial structure, speech, and position of remaining teeth.

6. Provide additional tips. Expect your denturist to provide you with additional advice on how to properly clean and maintain your dentures.

7. Discuss options available based on your needs. Your denturist may prescribe a denture cleaning solution or other items that can help make dentures fit and feel better.
